A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE WESTLAKE CANYON OAKS NEIGHBORHOODÂ
Westlake Canyon Oaks was developed between 1978 and 1981 by Watt Industries. At that time, the city of Westlake Village did not exist (being incorporated in 1981) and the area was governed by the county of Los Angeles. Most of the surrounding area was open space, being remnants of the old Russell Ranch, where cattle were kept for many years. At the time of development, Valley Oaks cemetery was the only establishment north of the 101 freeway, and Lindero Canyon Road ended at Hedgewall Drive. In fact, until the middle 1980’s, sheep were still herding in the area which is now Kanan Road and Lindero Canyon Road, and Thousand Oaks Boulevard ended at Lake Lindero Drive. What a different place and time. Westlake Canyon Oaks was developed in three phases. The first phase consisted of all the homes on the east side of Lindero Canyon (Janlor, Whim, Oakrim, Logwood). The second phase consisted of the homes on Cardoza, Catarina and Overfall, with the final phase consisting of the homes in the northwest corner of the development (Hedgewall, Mingus, Kerrmoor and Landino). Four models were offered: The San Miguel (plan 42 - 3 bedrooms, single story), the San Fernando (4 bedrooms, single story), the San Francisco (plan 55 - 4 bedrooms, 2 story) and the San Jose (plan 26 - largest – 4 bedrooms, 2 story), with each model having three different exteriors choices. Prices started at around $120,000 and rose to $148,000 (home interest rates at this time were hovering around eighteen to twenty percent!). Initial purchasers received a free one-year membership to the Lake Lindero Country Club. The development provided for open space surrounding the perimeter of our homes totaling about 150 acres which offers a great buffer. A majority of the acreage is owned by the Homeowner’s association. Throughout the years,  Westlake Canyon Oaks has continued to be a great place to call home.
